About Venous Sinus Stenting for IIH or Pulsatile Tinnitus

Venous sinus stenting, or VSS, is an advanced procedure to treat a narrowing of a major vein in the brain. When that vein is too narrow to keep the fluids in the brain in balance, the resulting increase in pressure can cause headaches, pulsatile tinnitus, and vision disturbances.

How Stenting Works

Healthy Blood Flow

Healthy Blood Flow

In a brain with healthy vessels, blood continually enters and drains, and that balance allows the brain to maintain normal intracranial pressure.

Stenosis

Abnormal narrowing in the draining veins causes a buildup of pressure that can lead to pulsatile tinnitus, headache, and vision problems.

The insertion of a tiny stent can restore the blood vessel to normal width, allowing healthy draining and alleviating symptoms.
